Vijaya Lakshmi Nehru Pandit is an Indian diplomat and politician, sister of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She was born in one of the most famous families of the country. After India gained independence from Great Britain in 1947, Vijaya Pandit entered the diplomatic service and became Indian Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1947-1949), the United States and Mexico (1949-1951), Ireland (1955-1961) (and at the same time the High Commissioner in Great Britain) and Spain (1958-1961).
